Rebuilding of KY Sanctuary - The Background

  1. The "impression" to rebuild the Sanctuary came in early 2001.  The LCEC had been praying, seeking confirmation and discussing this matter since then.  Every LCEC member individually confirmed this leading of God.  God has given us this vision – it's our duty to follow.

  1. KY Vision Statement is for us to enlarge all our ministries, particularly

  • The KY Youth and Children Ministries

  • The ministry of SMU Students who will surround us in 2/3 years time.

There must be sufficient rooms / space / facilities for the growing

Ministries.  We must remain relevant in order to meet the needs of the surrounding community – a home and a lighthouse. The Museum MRT station with its exit next to KY will certainly increase the accessibility of our Church.  Attendance in general will increase.

  1. KY's existing space is already used to the maximum by the current ministries.  Shortage would be felt even more as years go by.  We build now, so that the generations after us can have more space for the enlarged ministries.  This was the thought which guided KY founding fathers, when they first decided to buy the 20,000 sq ft land at Number 1 Queen Street 50 years ago.  At that time with fewer than 100 members – 2000 sq feet land would have been enough for their needs then.  But that would also mean we would not be here today.

  1. The design and layout of the current Sanctuary  was planned and erected based on the needs in the 1950s. Our numbers have increased, and our needs have changed over the years.  Its relevance has diminished, even in its current layout. * Optimizing the land use is imperative, as space available is limited and short.

  1. SMU buildings which literally surround KY would be tall and most modern. When their premises are completed, they would reflect KY Church building to be small, old, and run-down.   This does not reflect rightly the glory of God.  Moreover, there's possibility that a run-down building in the middle of the city may invite a government acquisition.  The estimated cost for the rebuilding is $4 million.   KY cannot afford the rebuilding cost now.  But we can start saving for it from today.   We can definitely accumulate the $4 million needed in 3 or 4 years time.

  1. Lease of KY land expires in 29 years.  30-year lease is what the Government would give, even if we were to buy a piece of land to build a new church in a new town.  The Land alone would cost us  $7m to $8m  and another $5m to $6m for constructing the new building.  Also the Government stipulates that construction must be completed within 3 years after the land is transferred over to the buyer.   Therefore we would be forced to fork out $12m to $13m over a period of 3 years in order to build a completely new building. In comparison, there is great incentive for us to build NOW.  Delaying it for a few years more would lessen this incentive.

* (Explanation: If we do not rebuild, the space will not be properly utilized. E.g. the sanctuary's orientation and the annex section on the left where people "hide" does not enhance worship. The two small, odd rooms at the front of the sanctuary is space wasted. Odd-shaped choir room is underutilized. The fellowship hall can be put to better use. The basement beneath the stage, the office under the main staircase, the flooring and fans have become rather irrelevant and outmoded).
